Developed for and taught by Emergency Physicians, The Ultrasound Course will provide you with the skills and resources to undertake ultrasound effectively and with confidence. Experienced faculty will develop your technical and interpretation skills, and enable you to integrate or extend ultrasound use and findings in your practice.

With two workshops available at specific experience levels, The Ultrasound Course – Core and The Ultrasound Course – Advanced, each course involves a combination of hands-on skills-stations, case-based discussions and lectures.

The Alfred Emergency and Trauma Centre is a major trauma, transplant and ECMO centre; seeing significant numbers of trauma and critically unwell patients. Ultrasound is used in the vast majority of these patients. Our internationally recognised team of experts that comprise The Ultrasound Course faculty draw on this experience to foster your skills and confidence in Ultrasound practice.

This entry-level course will provide you with basic probe handling and manipulation skills. Embark on developing your skills to perform and integrate eFAST and AAA scanning into your daily practice in the ED, Urgent Care Centre, ICU or GP practice.

An introduction to the vascular access module will improve your skills in gaining ultrasound guided peripheral intravenous, arterial and central access.

Registration includes approximately 10 hours of pre-course study (materials provided), to ensure you can get the most from your attendance.

This is an advanced level course. You will learn how to perform and integrate basic cardiac and lung ultrasound into critically unwell patients.

Topics covered in this module include assessing for a pericardial effusion and tamponade, basic assessment of the LV and RV function, assessing fluid status in the unwell patient and developing your skills in lung ultrasound to assess for pneumothorax, pneumonia, cardiac failure and effusions.

The course includes two pre-course quizzes.

    • Pathology: LV, RV, IVC, Pericardial effusion – pearls & pitfalls
    • Volume assessment
    • ABC’s of lung ultrasound

    • RUSH examination

Consultant/physician $900 +GST
Registrar/trainee $750 +GST

Registration fees include a light lunch.


REFUND POLICY

Substitution:
If, after booking an event you are unable to attend, you are welcome to nominate someone else to attend in your place. Please advise substitutions via email so a correct name tag will be available at the registration desk. CPD hours will be allocated to the substitute delegate. 

Refunds (non-COVID):
Cancellation more than 30 days before the event: 70% refund. Cancellation less than 30 days before the event: no refund, cancellation must be in writing.

Dr Luke Phillips is an Emergency Physician at Alfred Health in Melbourne and currently the Co-Director of Emergency Medicine Training. He is a passionate educator and has been fortunate enough to be able to combine this with his love of emergency ultrasound. Luke has a special interest in the use of focused ultrasound for critically unwell patients, in trauma management and in the use of ultrasound to guide procedures and improve patient safety in the ED. He is currently the Co-Chair of the Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Group (EMUGS.org) Board of Directors and holds a number of CCPU units through ASUM.

Dr. Elissa Kennedy-Smith is an Emergency Physician who works at Sandringham Hospital Emergency Department and The Royal Women’s Hospital in their Early Pregnancy Assessment Service. Elissa has an avid interest in all Emergency applications of Point of Care Ultrasound, completing her CCPU in AAA, E-FAST and 1st trimester in 2012, and then going on to attain her Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound (Emergency) in October 2017. She enjoys teaching, especially Focused Ultrasound in the ED, has been an instructor on many courses, and is currently the Ultrasound Lead for Emergency Medicine at Alfred Health, as well as being a Committee member for EMUGs Victoria.
Dr Adam Bystrzycki is an Emergency Physician at the Alfred Emergency and Trauma Centre with over 20 years experience in the management of major trauma. He is also the former Director of Sandringham Emergency and Deputy Director of Emergency Services for Alfred Health. He has interests in trauma resuscitation, point-of-care ultrasound and critical care echocardiography. He has been involved in educating clinicians in the use of ultrasound for bedside clinical decision support for the last 10 years and has served on the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine’s Ultrasound
Subcommittee.
