Clinical Leadership and Management

This course will prepare you for the transition from emergency clinician to emergency leader. You will learn how to guide and support your service and your colleagues, and to lead or develop a department which enables exemplary patient care. The program is led by an experienced faculty holding national and international leadership positions in emergency medicine and healthcare over the last 20 years. This course can either be completed as a standalone certificate, or as one unit towards the Master of Public Health with Monash University.

A STANDALONE CERTIFICATE COURSE OR 6 CREDIT POINTS TOWARDS A MASTERS PROGRAM
OVERVIEW

This unit will increase clinicians’ awareness of non-medical management principles and processes and the influence of the organisation and government on the provision of patient care.

The leadership content is specific to the emergency and trauma department setting and includes:

  • Effective clinical leadership
  • Successful service development
  • Managing the emergency care process, including understanding pre-hospital systems and influences
  • The importance of establishing data management and presentation/outcomes registries
  • Measuring and improving quality
  • Developing robust research and training programs
  • Accountability for department performance
  • Human resources issues in the emergency and trauma department setting
  • Running health care projects

This course can either be completed as a standalone certificate, or as one unit towards the Master of Public Health with Monash University.

  • Clinicians and senior administrators with responsibility for the delivery of an emergency clinical service
  • Emergency Fellows and advanced trainees eager to develop their leadership skills and expand their career opportunities.

    FORMAT

    The Clinical Leadership and Management course is a 12-week program.

    The course format will include:

    • Online tutorials.
    • Weekly online readings.
    • A weekly online discussion task.
    • Online video podcasts.
    • A compulsory one day workshop.
     
    LEARNING OUTCOMES

    Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

    1. Implement a robust and defensible approach to clinical leadership in the emergency and trauma context.
    2. Apply a critically reflective approach towards the management of human resources’ issues in the emergency and trauma context.
    3. Positively influence key stakeholders within the emergency and trauma context.
    4. Critically evaluate quality improvement measures in the emergency and trauma context.
    5. Apply high-level analytical and leadership skills in relation to the implementation of a range of health care projects of relevance to the emergency and trauma context.

    ASSESSMENT SUMMARY

    Hurdle requirement:

    1. Attendance to a one day workshop.

     

    Assessments:

    1. Written report of 5000 words: develop, justify, and plan implementation of (one of) a quality improvement. program, a staff engagement program or a service development project relevant to the student’s local clinical setting. (40%)
    2. Personal reflection of 1000 words on completion of workshop. (20%)
    3. Timely response to 12 weekly online discussion questions linked to lecture and readings. (40%)
     
     
     
    FEES
    • $3,500.00 per person + GST
    • Course fee includes all required learning resources.

     

    TERMS AND CONDITIONS
    • In very rare cases, due to clinical demand or other unforeseen, unavoidable reasons, courses may need to be cancelled. In this instance registrants will be advised urgently and will receive a full refund for registration fees.
    • If you are no longer able to attend this course you may transfer the fees to the next available date.
    • If you are no longer able to attend this course you may transfer course fees to another person without penalty.
    • All transfer requests must be made in writing.

     

    REFUND POLICY
    • Cancellation more than 30 days before the event: 70% refund.
    • Cancellation less than 30 days: no refund.

     A/Prof De Villiers is an experienced Emergency Physician with a strong interest in clinical research, systems design, quality improvement and patient flow. As Director of Emergency Services at Alfred Health and Director of The Alfred Emergency & Trauma Centre, de Villiers oversees the busiest trauma centre in Australasia and has been instrumental in developing and implementing several care models to improve patient care and experience.
    Professor Peter Cameron is Academic Director of Alfred Health Emergency, and Professor of Emergency, and Precinct Lead of the Alfred-Monash Research and Education Precinct. He is Past President of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and the International Federation for Emergency Medicine. He has also just completed his term as the Clinical Lead for the Emergency Clinical Care Network for Victoria.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    Is it compulsory to attend the one-day Workshop?
    Yes. Failure to attend will result in non-completion of the course. Students should request this day off from their employer. Students please refer to the dates provided on the website.

    Can I access the online course content prior to the course commencement date?
    No. The online course content is only available to those registered students from the first day the course commences. It is important that students try logging into the system from day one to check they have no access issues.

    I am an International Student am I eligible to enrol into this course?
    This course is open to domestic and international students. The course is currently delivered entirely online, so students just need access to a computer and an internet connection to take part.

    Does this course count towards the Master of Clinical Medicine and Master of Public Health?
    Yes. Successful completion of the CLAM course contributes six credit points towards the Master of Clinical Medicine or the Master of Public Health with Monash University.

    Yes. CLAM is approved by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and accredited by Australian College of Rural Remote Medicine for CPD.
