This course will prepare you for the transition from emergency clinician to emergency leader. You will learn how to guide and support your service and your colleagues, and to lead or develop a department which enables exemplary patient care. CLINICAL LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
A STANDALONE CERTIFICATE COURSE OR 6 CREDIT POINTS TOWARDS A MASTERS PROGRAM
OVERVIEW
This unit will increase clinicians’ awareness of non-medical management principles and processes and the influence of the organisation and government on the provision of patient care.
The leadership content is specific to the emergency and trauma department setting and includes:
- Effective clinical leadership
- Successful service development
- Managing the emergency care process, including understanding pre-hospital systems and influences
- The importance of establishing data management and presentation/outcomes registries
- Measuring and improving quality
- Developing robust research and training programs
- Accountability for department performance
- Human resources issues in the emergency and trauma department setting
- Running health care projects
This unit can be completed as part of a Masters program (such as a Master of Clinical Medicine) or as a standalone certificate course.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Clinicians and senior administrators with responsibility for the delivery of an emergency clinical service
Emergency Fellows and advanced trainees eager to develop their leadership skills and expand their career opportunities.

This course will be delivered online in accordance to the Monash University semesters.

FORMAT
The Clinical Leadership and Management course is a semester long university program.
The course format will include:
- Weekly online readings
- A weekly online discussion task
- Online video podcasts
- A compulsory 8 hour workshop
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:
- Implement a robust and defensible approach to clinical leadership in the emergency and trauma context;
- Apply a critically reflective approach towards the management of human resources’ issues in the emergency and trauma context;
- Positively influence key stakeholders within the emergency and trauma context
- Critically evaluate quality improvement measures in the emergency and trauma context
- Apply high-level analytical and leadership skills in relation to the implementation of a range of health care projects of relevance to the emergency and trauma context

ASSESSMENT SUMMARY
Hurdle requirement:
- Attendance to a one day workshop*
Assessments:
- Written report of 5000 words: develop, justify, and plan implementation of (one of) a quality improvement program, a staff engagement program or a service development project relevant to the student’s local clinical setting.(40%)
- Personal reflection of 1000 words on completion of workshop (20%)
- Timely response to 12 weekly online discussion questions linked to lecture and readings (40%)
COURSE COMPLETION
On completion of this course students will receive certification from Monash University. This certificate will indicate competency in the learning objectives described in the course overview. Credit towards Masters programs can be obtained.
* The workshop is subject to change due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This workshop may be delivered remotely, partially or in full, in accordance with government guidance at the time.

- $3,500.00 per person + GST
- Course fee includes all required learning resources.

- In very rare cases, due to clinical demand or other unforeseen, unavoidable reasons, courses may need to be cancelled. In this instance registrants will be advised urgently and will receive a full refund for registration fees.
- If you are no longer able to attend this course you may transfer the fees to the next available date.
- If you are no longer able to attend this course you may transfer course fees to another person without penalty.
- All transfer requests must be made in writing.
REFUND POLICY
- Cancellation more than 30 days before the event: 70% refund.
- Cancellation less than 30 days: no refund.
- Cancellation must be in writing.
